Relying upon years of experience in helping families to decipher their family's headstones/ grave markers in my work as a rabbi, I will first sharpen the image to maximize the amount and accuracy of text extracted.
- Then I will translate all text from Hebrew/ Yiddish into English and when Biblical verses or traditional expressions are used, I will source and explain these more fully.
- Family names for genealogical study will be annotated and explained.
- Lastly, Hebrew dates for birth and death will be translated and converted into Gregorian calendar dates to more easily track yahrtzeits.
- If there is reference to a prominent rabbinical family or Chassidic dynasty, some basic explanation will be offered of the connection and possibly links to relevant family trees and geographical origins.

What if you cannot read the entire tombstone?
I will translate all that I can see and work with adjustments in color, contrast, and other settings to maximize the readability.
Can you suggest similar names for genealogy research?
Yes, often times I will point out that the Yiddish name Sender can often be written as Alexander in its full form. Or that someone named Tzvi which is a Hebrew name might also go by Hersh the Yiddish equivalent.
Can you suggest what someone's Hebrew name is if the stone only lists the English name?
I can only offer an educated guess but nothing more. Someone name Philip might be Ephraim or he might now. A Boris might be a Boruch but he might not be.
