I've been running games and building worlds for over a decade now — I've played everything from D&D 3.5 to 5e (both editions) and Daggerheart, and most of that time has been spent in Theater of the Mind, which I think is where storytelling really lives.
The way I see it, a character sheet tells a story before anyone rolls a single die. The numbers matter, sure, but they should come from somewhere. So whether I'm building a Daggerheart Adversary or a D&D hero, I start with the same questions: What is this character? Why do they exist in this world? And what happens when everything goes wrong?
