I build and run automation infrastructure, mostly n8n, on servers I manage myself.
That means self-hosted n8n in Docker behind a reverse proxy with automatic TLS, WhatsApp bots built straight on Meta's Cloud API rather than through a reseller, and a voice agent running in production on LiveKit.
Most of what I know came from operating these rather than reading about them: silent failures, dead refresh tokens, certificates that stopped renewing, credentials sitting where exports leak them.
If self-hosting is the wrong answer for your case, I will say so.
